Shawn Baldwin

Biography

A man sells popcorn from a cart during a moulid in Tanta, Egypt. Every year following the October cotton harvest the Tanta moulid, a religious festival, is held to celebrate the memory of Ahmed al-Bedawi, a local 13th Century Sufi saint. The Tanta moulid, is the largest one held in Egypt attracting at least tens of thousands of people from around the country. October 2008.

Shawn Baldwin is a photographer based in Cairo, Egypt, whose work regularly appears in The New York Times as well as other international publications including Time Magazine, Vanity Fair and the New York Times Magazine.

Shawn lived in Baghdad for three years covering the war in Iraq while documenting the plight of the Iraqi people and the struggle of US forces serving there. Since that time he has worked throughout the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe on stories ranging from extreme poverty in the slums of Mumbai to the growing influence of Islam across the Arab world.

In 2002 he received a second place Magazine Portrait & Personality award in the Best of Photojournalism competition for his work in Afghanistan.

In addition to editorial work, some of his other clients include the United Nations and leading Fortune 500 companies JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Paramount Studios and Nike.
